Sunchalker Shortlisted for The Australian/Vogel Literary Award
Sunchalker David Allan-Petale has been shortlisted for the prestigious Vogel award sponsored by The Australian and Allen & Unwin publishers for his second novel Locust Summer. The $20,000 award is for an unpublished novel by a writer under 35 and the results will be announced at a glossy cocktails and canapés party at Sydney Harbour on 26 April.
David joined Chalk the Sun back in 2010 after Ardella Jones propositioned him outside the bookshop in Balham (now sadly estate agents). Back then his first novel was a few paragraphs but he joined us on our first Italian retreat and it started to grow. Since then David has married long-term girlfriend Carmen, blogged his way around the world with her, produced his finest work – daughter Ruby – and written two novels.
He says modestly, “Nothing’s certain with the award, but I’m hoping I meet an agent or something and no matter what happens I can always say I was shortlisted for the Vogel. I’m keeping my head down, working on my second draft of a new book and just ploughing ahead. The blank page remains. Couldn’t have done this without you. It started with you handing me a flyer for Chalk on that grey Balham street corner, and you and Jo and the Wolfman unlocked a world of colour. Thank you for your insights and guidance and patience with my appalling grammar over many years. I’m indebted to you.”
We wish David the very best of luck. His hard work is paying off! https://www.allenandunwin.com/being-a-writer/the-australian-vogel-s-literary-award
