Children’s Fiction Country House Day

Whether you hope to publish or you’re writing to entertain the grandchildren, this event is a must. We start with coffee and breakfast followed by a busy morning of workshops and writing exercises. A late lunch with wine leads into our Q&A, then we end by sharing our work over homemade cake, tea and more wine.

This all-day course may cover children’s picture books and early readers, pre-teen novels, non-fiction formats, and devising multi-platform concepts for all age categories. We will ask you to complete a questionnaire so the course content is geared to your ideas and work in progress, with exercises and opportunities for one-to-one feedback during the day.

Useful handouts will be provided on your specialist area including picture book formats and layouts. Skill sessions will improve your writing and editing techniques.  Topics may include: ideas generation, creating engaging openings, scene-setting and creating characters, plot and theme, creating satisfying endings plus combining text and illustrations effectively, age appropriate language.

Publishing expert and children’s book editor Simona Sideri will chair a Q&A on industry requirements and guidelines, submitting work to agents and publishers.

Tutors will be Simona Sideri, children’s publisher/editor, and Chalk director, writer Ardella Jones.
